Book Short Summary:

Every December an envelope bearing a stamp from the North Pole would arrive for J.R.R. Tolkien’s children. Inside would be a letter in a strange, spidery handwriting and a beautiful colored drawing or painting. The letters were from Father Christmas. They told wonderful tales of life at the North Pole: how the reindeer got loose and scattered presents all over the place; how the accident-prone North Polar Bear climbed the North Pole and fell through the roof of Father Christmas’s house into the dining room; how he broke the Moon into four pieces and made the Man in it fall into the back garden; how there were wars with the troublesome horde of goblins who lived in the caves beneath the house, and many more. No reader, young or old, can fail to be charmed by Tolkien’s inventiveness in this classic holiday treat.

Book Short Summary:

1998 New York Public Library Best Book for the Teen Age New York is seemingly the center of the universe during the Christmas season, beginning with Santa's arrival in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and culminating with the dropping of the ball in Times Square on New Year's Eve. And why not? After all, New York is the birthplace of electric Christmas tree lights, Lionel trains, F. A. O. Schwarz, "White Christmas," and, of course, Santa Claus. In Christmas in New York, Daniel Pool takes the reader on a tour of present-day New York Christmas attractions (the Rockefeller Center Tree, the store windows, the shows, the songs, the smells.) He tells little-known facts and stories about the history of Christmas in New York (how Maurice Sendak's career started designing F. A. O. Schwarz windows; how Guy Lombardo's "Auld Lang Syne" became the official New Year's song; a complete "Santology"). And finally, there is a section on "The Ghosts of Christmas Past"--long-time New York Christmas traditions that have fallen by the wayside. A marvelous mingling of the now and then, Pool's book, with fifty unique photographs and a characteristic biting wit, conveys the true New York Christmas spirit.

Book Short Summary:

Film plays a vital role in the celebration of Christmas. For decades, it has taught audiences about what the celebration of the season looks like – from the decorations to the costumes and to the expected snowy weather – as well as mirrors our own festivities back to us. Films like It’s a Wonderful Life and Home Alone have come to play key roles in real-life domestic celebrations: watching such titles has become, for many families, every bit as important as tree-trimming and leaving cookies out for Santa. These films have exported the American take on the holiday far and wide and helped us conjure an image of the perfect holiday. Rather than settling the ‘what is a Christmas film?’ debate – indeed, Die Hard and Lethal Weapon are discussed within – Analyzing Christmas in Film: Santa to the Supernatural focuses on the how Christmas is presented on the deluge of occasions when it appears. While most Christmas films are secular, religion makes many cameos, appearing through Nativity references, storylines involving spiritual rebirth, the framing of Santa as a Christ-like figure and the all-importance of family, be it the Holy family or just those gathered around the dining table. Also explored are popular narratives involving battles with stress and melancholy, single parents and Christmas martyrs, visits from ghosts and angels, big cities and small towns, break-ups and make-ups and the ticking clock of mortality. Nearly 1000 films are analyzed in this volume to determine what the portrayal of Christmas reveals about culture, society and faith as well as sex roles, consumerism, aesthetics and aspiration.

Book Short Summary:

A funny and heart-warming tribute to Canada’s most famous small town, and its most celebrated humourist, Stephen Leacock. Many Canadians grew up in small towns, or at least in neighbourhoods that acted like small towns. But what if you grew up in Canada’s most famous small town—Stephen Leacock’s Mariposa? This was the world that journalist Jamie Lamb was raised in, the actual place that inspired Leacock’s Canadian classic, Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town, over a century ago. The Mariposa of Lamb’s time was slightly different, yet it still embodied the heart and soul, the eccentricities and the bizarre local customs of Leacock’s sketches. Christmas in Mariposa is a celebration of that town and its people. It tells of secret gardens, special rinks, oddball hotels, remarkable foods, fast boats and sunken aircraft, Christmas Eve fireworks, and the best Christmas office party in the country. It describes a place where Christmas could be celebrated in summer with a Baby Jesus look-alike contest, Canada’s only officially sanctioned reindeer races, and the Three Wise Men arriving with gifts by parachute. It transports readers to a world where where Gordie Howe once dropped by for a skate, and Glenn Gould regularly came to eat a well-done steak and six Parker House rolls slathered in butter at a Chinese restaurant. Jamie Lamb’s Mariposa is timeless and quintessentially Canadian.

Book Short Summary:

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,5, University of Stuttgart, course: Cultural Seminar, language: English, abstract: "Christmas... that magic blanket that wraps itself about us, that something so intangible that it is like a fragrance. It may weave a spell of nostalgia. Christmas may be a day of feasting, or of prayer, but always it will be a day of remembrance, a day in which we think of everything we have ever loved." This quote by Augusta E. Rundel illustrates so well the innermost feelings of the speaker in Dylan Thomas' A Child's Christmas in Wales, who reminisces about the most beautiful time of the year he passed with family and friends. However, he does not just recount facts in an emotionally detached way; and it is the aim of this term paper to analyze the confounding of the adult and the child speaker, that is, the former being entirely plunged in his memories surrounding him “like a fragrance”, he seems to actually be the child he was, reliving some scenes again. First of all, after having given some information about the text version of Thomas' work, I will introduce Gérard Genette's theory of narratology, and mainly focus on the distinction between narration and focalization. This subtle difference, as well as other terminology referring to the question of perspective, is very enriching, as it permits to localize the narrator's point of view and involvement, to understand the story's organization, and eventually, to reflect on the how and why of the blurring of boundaries between the adult speaker of the here and now (at the moment of speaking), and the child speaker experiencing the events. I will argue that those two are intertwined, with several gradations more or less explicit in text and film. Next, the way of narrating, the style, and linguistic issues will be examined, in order to attribute certain expressions or sentence structures either rather to the adult, or to the child. Of course it is not always possible to draw a clear-cut line, but nevertheless, there are passages which I believe to be revealing when arguing in favor of a perspective. It is crucial not to forget that the latter does not stay static, but that we can detect shifts of position throughout the story. This gives reason to dwell on some scenes in further detail. The second part of my work will deal with the film A Child's Christmas in Wales. As above, I will begin with some general remarks; then I would like to investigate the impact of the camera position because a stage director, by means of making different choices concerning distance, or angle of vision, can influence the spe.

Book Short Summary:

This gathering of all Dylan Thomas's stories, ranging chronologically from the dark, almost surrealistic tales of Thomas's youth to such gloriously rumbustious celebrations of life as A Child's Christmas in Wales and Adventures in the Skin Trade, charts the progress of "The Rimbaud of Cwmdonkin Drive" toward his mastery of the comic idiom. Here, too, are stories originally written for radio and television and, in a short appendix, the schoolboy pieces first published in the Swansea Grammar School Magazine. A highpoint of the collection is Thomas's Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog, a vivid collage of memories from his Swansea childhood that combines the lyricism of his poetry with the sparkle and sly humor of Under Milk Wood. Also here is the fiction from Quite Early One Morning, a collection planned by Thomas shortly before his death. Altogether there are more than forty stories, providing a rich and varied literary feast and showing Dylan Thomas in all his intriguing variety-somber fantasist, joyous word-spinner, comedian of smalltown Wales. The book includes an entertaining, informative reflection on Thomas by another Welsh poet and storyteller, Leslie Norris, as well as a brief listing of publication details by Professor Walford Davies, editor of Dylan Thomas: Early Prose Works.

Waynes hope was that a dialog would ensue in which everyone, including himself, would learn something new in the New Year. The topics are diverse: touching politics, faith, society, war, family and human nature. Waynes self-imposed rule was that they be written in one sitting, but they are far from spontaneous outbursts of opinion or perfunctory pabulum. Book Short Summary:

A young American soldier stationed in Germany in 1952 meets a British girl in London. He romances her during their first day in a glorious pub crawl while accompanied by his army buddy. The next day, they enjoy the playing fields of Eton and a band concert for the queen at Windsor Castle. When they bid each other goodbye at Euston Station, they are already infatuated. They have seen each other for less than two days, never alone. She tries to visit him in Germany, but travel restrictions for the trip cause her to cancel. Angry over being stood up, the soldier and his buddy visit Ireland, Wales, and even London; and he does not call her. Returning to the barracks in Germany, he finds her telegram that had arrived too late. The two cannot meet before his being sent back to the states for separation from the military. They exchange letters for four years, trying to reunite either in England or America. But problems intervene, including a girl to whom the soldier had been engaged to before his London adventure and a conniving woman. He and the British girl struggle during his residency year at Stanford University to qualify for his PhD. Their greatest problem is pregnancy.
